We're BATTY over Bats!

We've been learning all about bats the past few weeks......did you know that bats can eat over 600 mosquitos in an hour? Our class has come to the conclusion - and rightly so - that bats are very helpful creatures and not scary at all ! Here are of few pictures of some of our research on bats!

Lastly we wrote all we have learned about theses fascinating Bats!

We also drew and painted pumpkins so we could add a pumpkin patch to our bulletin board!

Have a great week!

School Beginnings!

Can you believe that it is already September? And that we've already been in school for 6 days? Hopefully this coming week will be much cooler than last week was - Friday was brutal!

We have had a wonderful start to our year in second grade! Our class is fabulous - filled with very sweet, thoughtful, and engaged children. I am enjoying them very much. We have been working to get to know each other, class routines, expectations, and accepted behaviors.

In math we have been reviewing math concepts, and this week we will start our unit on Place Value. We will be using many manipulatives and hands-on activities. In reading we have been reviewing vowel sounds and high frequency words from first grade. Next week we will officially begin our first reading unit.

We have also begun learning about the Daily 5! The first part of the Daily 5 is "Read to Self". During this time the students choose a spot to read, pick an appropriate book, and read quietly to themselves. Yes, this does take lots of practice! We have learned how to choose a good book, how to choose a good spot to sit, and how to stay in one spot. We started off doing this for 3 minutes at a time. We are now up to 15 minutes after only 5 days of practice!! The students are SO proud of themselves - and so am I ! this coming week we will start the next step, which is 'Work on Writing'. Eventually the children will be doing all of these activities while I work with reading groups. It works wonderfully! All students engaged and learning - while loving every minute of it. Ask your child their thoughts!

Our Specials ( P.E., Art, Library/Media, and Music) this year have a different schedule which you might have heard from your child. We will be having the same special for a full week, then will rotate to the next special. Our class looks like this:

then it will start over:

The children will have an opportunity each week to check out and return library books. I will also try to remind you when it's their week for Gym (P.E.) so they can remember to bring sneakers. This is new to all of us, so it will take a bit of time to get used to it!

I want to thank everyone for remembering to send in such healthy snacks for your children! They are very proud when they show me what they have - so cute!

If anyone would like to donate plastic spoons, soft tissues, wipes, or small whiteboard markers, it would be VERY appreciated! We are in dire need of all these items. Thank you in advance for your generosity!

Have a wonderful week!

Meet the Teacher !

Our "Meet the Teacher" is this coming Tuesday from 2-4! I'm hoping that you will all be able to stop in to say hello! I've been working hard to get our room in tip-top shape for the first day of school. I can't wait to see you all! The janitors have  also been working very hard all summer to clean our school from top to bottom - it looks fabulous!

The first day of school is Thursday, September 1st! You will not need to bring anything besides a backpack [no wheels please], a  healthy snack, lunch [unless you're buying hot lunch], and a water bottle that has a spout [no screw tops please!!]

I am SO excited to get to know you all! We will be learning so much this year, and doing SO many fun activities! I hope you're ready to have a great learning experience in second grade!  :-)

See you all VERY soon!

Fairytales and Butterflies !!

Can you believe that it is already the middle of May? Wow, this year has zoomed by! Soon we will all be saying goodbye and looking forward to some much needed relaxation!

As usual, we have been very busy in Room 18. We completed our "Pirate " writings, and have moved on to writing a Fairy Tale . My budding authors are writing a story around a "Poison Apple". What fabulous imaginations these students have! They've been bitten by the writing bug and are using transition words, adjectives, elements of Fairy Tale writing [ask your child what these are!] to develop some outstanding works of fiction! You'll be able to see their final products later this week.

We have been very excited in class as we witnessed our caterpillars turn into their chrysalis this past week. This metamorphosis is SO awesome! We now have to wait for a few more days before our butterflies emerge. The students have been very engaged in this science unit - we've been learning all sorts of new information! After a day or two we will let them fly away......always a sad moment for us! Check back later this week for pictures of our release day.  :-)

We continue to read daily, both with partners, as a class, and by ourselves. This class LOVES to read! It warms my heart.  :-)  We also continue to learn about various parts of grammar and punctuation. In Math we have been learning about fractions. We will be doing a mini-unit next week on area and perimeter. As our year begins to wind down we will also be doing some math review of all we've learned this year.

As always, if you have any concerns or questions please feel free to contact me!

Enjoy this beautiful sunny weather!
